Fortunately most dislocated hips will usually have been diagnosed before this time. Relocation of the hip after age 3 is difficult and the results of surgery are not as favourable as in younger children.
The leg will be short and the socket shallow. In order to bring the femoral head back into the socket the femur bone itself will almost always need to be divided (femoral osteotomy) In addition an open reduction plus a pelvic osteotomy will be required.
